Background of the Study
Urban sprawl in Nigeria has become a significant phenomenon as cities expand beyond traditional boundaries in response to population growth and economic pressures. The expansion of urban areas into peripheral regions has created a mix of planned developments and informal settlements. While sprawl can signal economic dynamism and an increasing demand for land and housing, it also introduces challenges related to inefficient land use, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental degradation (Okeke, 2023). Economically, urban sprawl can lead to increased commuting times, higher transportation costs, and a fragmented urban fabric that undermines the delivery of public services (Babatunde, 2024). On one hand, the proliferation of new suburban developments can stimulate local economies by creating construction jobs and boosting commercial activity. On the other, it may dilute economic resources, leading to disparities between core urban areas and their expanding peripheries. Recent research underscores the need for strategic planning to harness the benefits of urban expansion while mitigating its negative externalities (Akinyemi, 2023). In Nigeria, where urban planning frameworks are often underdeveloped, the consequences of uncontrolled urban sprawl have become particularly evident. This study explores the dual-edged impact of urban sprawl on economic development by analyzing how spatial expansion affects infrastructure, service delivery, and investment patterns. It also examines policy responses aimed at controlling sprawl and promoting sustainable urban growth (Ibrahim, 2024). By evaluating both the economic gains and the pitfalls associated with urban sprawl, the research aims to offer insights into how balanced urban development strategies can be achieved.
Statement of the Problem
Urban sprawl in Nigeria has led to an uneven pattern of economic development where central urban areas flourish while peripheral regions suffer from neglect and underinvestment. The rapid and unplanned expansion of cities creates significant challenges such as increased transportation costs, infrastructural deficits, and environmental degradation, which hinder economic productivity and social equity (Chukwu, 2023). These issues not only reduce the efficiency of public service delivery but also exacerbate regional disparities, thereby impeding overall economic development. Moreover, the lack of coherent urban planning policies to regulate and manage sprawl further complicates the economic landscape, creating an imbalance that undermines long-term urban growth (Olu, 2023). There is an urgent need to understand the mechanisms by which urban sprawl influences economic development and to identify policy measures that can control its adverse effects while maximizing potential benefits (Nwachukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
• To examine the relationship between urban sprawl and economic development.
• To identify infrastructural and policy challenges associated with urban sprawl.
• To propose sustainable planning strategies to manage sprawl.
Research Questions:
• What is the impact of urban sprawl on economic development in Nigeria?
• What infrastructural challenges are exacerbated by urban sprawl?
• Which policy measures can effectively control urban sprawl while promoting economic growth?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Urban sprawl negatively affects economic development by straining infrastructure and services.
• H2: Lack of strategic urban planning intensifies the negative impacts of sprawl.
• H3: Sustainable planning interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of urban sprawl.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on selected expanding urban centers in Nigeria. Limitations include the variability of sprawl patterns and the availability of consistent urban data.
Definitions of Terms:
• Urban Sprawl: The uncontrolled expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural or undeveloped land.
• Economic Development: The process of improving economic well-being and quality of life in an area.
• Infrastructure: The fundamental facilities and systems serving a region.
